Dee Newell & Fergal Madden; Conquering The Channel

We are already on to Episode 7 of the new podcast, the Summer has flown by so quickly. In this episode Dee Newell and Fergal Madden are in the hot seat, the first episode featuring two guests.

The two proud Galwegians completed their crossing of the English Channel on the weekend of the 2nd & 3rd August. Accomplishing the feat with an incredible crew that saw the two swimmers become only the second and third solo channel swimmers from Galway, joining Alice Flood in the history books, whilst also joining an elite group of Irish Swimmers to have completed the solo channel crossing.

Fergal started just before midnight on the Friday completing the swim in 16 hours and 46 minutes.  Dee started just before 1am on the Saturday and completed her Channel crossing in 14 hours and 54 minutes.

Dee based in Dublin, is a Captain in the Irish Army and has a host of endurance and sporting challenges under her belt including: IRONMAN, marathon, kickboxing, bodybuilding and powerlifting.  Although she swam as a child she didn’t really fall in love with swimming until she took up marathon swimming in 2011, she now enjoys all forms of swimming from long distance to dips with friends to ice swimming in the depths of winter.

Fergal is one of the founding members and current chairman of Atlantic Masters Swimming Club in Galway. He took up swimming at the age of 29 and is proudly supported in his endeavours by his wife Norma and three children Ella, Jack & Saoirse. Although Fergal couldn’t swim back then he stubbornly battled through many a swim lesson so that he could earn a PADI diving qualification.  His swimming career and success was built on the back of this initial interest in diving, he now has numerous long distance swimming and ice swimming events under his belt with big plans for the future.

Both swimmers provide fantastic insight, information and inspiration in this episode in telling their personal story of how they conquered the Channel and completed the holy grail of marathon swimming.

Whether you plan to challenge yourself to the extent that Dee and Fergal did in completing a marathon swim of this nature, or you just need some support and inspiration to follow your own challenge in or out of the water, then this episode is well worth a listen.
